The women and men of Ivanhoe Mines join with the rest of the world in celebrating Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s life and legacy, which will stand as a noble example for all people, for all time. We mourn his passing and extend our condolences to his wife, Graça Machel, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and colleagues.

Madiba, as he was affectionately known by his clan name, led a deeply divided South African nation on the road to reconciliation and forgiveness, as well as social and economic reconstruction, after emerging without a trace of bitterness from 27 years in apartheid-era jails. He dedicated much of his public life to the advancement of peace, prosperity and the eradication of poverty throughout the African continent, and the world.

Madiba modestly observed in May 1999 upon stepping down as South Africa’s first black president: “I have, in a small way, done my duty to my country and to my people.”

There has been significant progress since 1994 when Nelson Mandela led the nation’s first democratically elected government, but there is still much to be done in fulfilling his dreams. We at Ivanhoe, in our small way, are proud to be helping to contribute to the realization of some of Madiba’s dreams by attracting Foreign Direct Investment, creating decent jobs, supporting local economic development and helping to establish sustainable communities associated with the development of our projects in South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We salute this great son of the African soil.

Robert Friedland
Executive Chairman
On behalf of the staff, management and board of Ivanhoe Mines
