The company was incorporated on April 29, 1993. On May 6, 2011 the shareholders of the company approved a reorganization which was completed in September 2012 and the company changed its name from Ivanhoe Nickel & Platinum Ltd. to Ivanplats Limited. On October 23, 2012 Ivanplats successfully closed a C$300 million (US$307 million) initial public offering and its shares began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol IVP.

On August 28, 2013 Ivanplats changed its name to Ivanhoe Mines to reflect that the company had grown to become more than a singularly focused platinum-group metals company. With the name change, Ivanhoe Mines shares began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol IVN.
