Ivanhoe Mines (TSX: IVN; OTCQX: IVPAF) is a Canadian mining company focused on advancing its three principal projects in Southern Africa: production from, and expansion of, the Kamoa-Kakula copper joint-venture mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Platreef palladium-rhodium-platinum-nickel-copper-gold discovery in South Africa; and the extensive redevelopment and upgrading of the historic Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine, also in the DRC.
The company began copper production at the Kamoa-Kakula joint-venture mine in the DRC in May 2021 at an annualized rate of approximately 200,000 tonnes of copper per year (100% project basis), and expects to double production to approximately 400,000 tonnes per annum with the start of operations of the Phase 2 expansion, scheduled to begin operations in 2022..
The company also is exploring for new copper discoveries on its 90%- and 100%-owned Western Foreland exploration licences, in close proximity to the Kamoa-Kakula mining licence.
